Fall is like, here and as I’m putting away my summer dresses, I’m having the dreaded feeling of jean shopping. Finding jeans that have the perfect fit for me is not easy. In fact, most of the time I get too frustrated and leave the store empty handed & time wasted.. My friend Kristi from Sparrow Boutique is a jean, expert. She was so kind and wanted to share her and her teams tips for finding the perfect pair for your body shape.
‘At Sparrow we do regular employee jeans training on all of the jeans we carry. We’re familiar with the various brands/styles and our love helping customers find their perfect fit. Our jeans vary in price range from $68 – $200 and we offer free shipping and returns on all of our jeans at www.shopsparrow.net.’
If you are a pear or hourglass shape (meaning wider in the hips and rear), it’s important to find jeans that are curvier in the hips and seat and have a higher rise to prevent the dreaded muffin top effect or gaping in the waist. Avoid distressing or whiskering as both will draw attention to the thigh and hip area and opt for a clean, dark wash in a boot cut or trouser style to balance out the hips. (We’d recommend James Jeans brand denim as they are designed with a higher rise and signature dart back pocket detailing to lift rear.)
For those with a boyish or triangle shape (meaning smaller in the hips, rear and waist), we recommend a skinny or cigarette leg to create more shape. Slight fading or distressing on the thighs can help create a fuller leg appearance for those with thin legs. (We love the Hudson Jean’s Collin Skinny style as it has a thick waist band, and triangle back flap pockets creating volume for those with a flat rear.)
Jeans are a closet staple but can be an investment piece. Due to the extensive process within the jeans manufacturing process, it tends to be worth paying extra for those brands that solely focus on making denim. Premium denim lines are constantly working on the fit, new washes, denim stretch and feel, and fabrications that hold the jean’s shape. Expect to pay $150+ for a high-quality pair of jeans that will last season to season. Pay attention to the fit (waist, rear, and thigh), the hand (or feel of the fabric), and the inseam (the leg length of the jeans). When trying on jeans – Take with you at least 2 sizes per style as sizing can change from style to style even in the same brand of denim. Do a squat in the mirror and check that there’s no gaping in the waist or pinching in the thighs. Think about what shoes you will mostly be wearing with the jeans. If you are planning to wear your skinny jeans with booties and flats, an ankle length is great. If planning to wear your jeans with pumps or over stacked heel boots, go up 2-3 inches on the inseam. Because jeans are mostly made of cotton, they will stretch out slightly so wear a 1-2″ wide belt with your denim. It’ll keep everything sitting properly. Lastly, we tell our customers if they are going to machine wash their denim, to keep them looking great, wash them inside out with similar colors, on the coldest water setting and let them air dry.
