So we’ve been on a gardening kick. To just start off we decided to make a raised bed from scratch. And you guys, we did it! We made a $30 raised garden bed and got everything from Home Depot! We were looking at kits but after thinking more about it, It seemed like it would be a pretty simple project. My love for gardening I feel like comes back every year around March or April but we never have a set plan of exactly what we want to do. So, unfortunately, a garden never happens. But I feel like if you want to garden but don’t want to overwhelm yourself these raised bed box gardens are the perfect solution.
Growing up my parents had a huge garden. I always hated weeding and watering. Those were always my chores… Hah. But doing this now it feels a lot like home and it’s becoming more and more natural. I think there is really something about getting out there, caring for plants, getting your hands in the soil. I think it’s an instant mood lifter!
Now I don’t like wordy posts so let’s get right into it!
• (2) 2″ x 2″ x 8′ $4.30
• (6) 1″ x 6″ x 6′ $27.47
Total for both: $31.77
• Galvanized screws 2″ long
• Measuring tape & pencil
• Drill
• Saw (circular miter)
Cut two of the 1″ x 6″ x 6′ pieces in half. So you have four 1″ x 6″ x 4′ pieces.
Cut your 1″ x 6″ x 6′ into 11″ pieces, so you’ll have 10 pieces.
Take two longer pieces (1″ x 6″ x 6) with four of the 11″ pieces and lay them out on top and space the furring strips out evenly. (this doesn’t need to be perfect)
Drill the longer pieces of wood into the 11″ pieces (we did this on the grass to start but eventually moved to the deck. It’s easier to do this on a harder surface.) Repeat with the other four furring strip pieces and the other two pieces of long wood.
Then take the two shorter pieces of wood 1″ x 6″ x 4′ and two 11″ pieces and drill one 11″ piece into the middle of each.
Then match them up to the longer pieces and drill them into them!
Building a $30 raised garden bed was actually easier than we thought and it took us less than an hour and how we have our garden! If you want to read all about what we’re planting, a raised bed garden layout and top 5 gardening tips make sure you check out that post here!
