The other day I had the privilege to work with Kristi from Sparrow Boutique in Muskegon, Mi! When I first walked into the store, I’d go as far to say it was pretty much heaven. She has classy items, but they’re unique as well. Oh had their jeans hug, tuck and lift in allll the right places. Her items are well priced, good quality but are still trendy. I am obsessed..
Sparrow carries indie artisan and locally made products, non-profit/free-trade jewelry and they’re started to carry plus-size styles as well. Sparrow carries woman’s clothes, jewelry, accessories, gifts and other gift cards! (perfect for the holidays!) Oh my gosh, you guys, and they carry Riffle Paper Co.

When did you become interested in fashion? I’ve been interested in fashion as long as I can remember. I recall being really young and waking up early to watch the Style channel. Where other kids my age were for sure watching cartoons, I was fascinated with all things fashion.
In three words, how would you describe your shop? Modern, versatile, unique
How did you get to where you are today? What has been your career path and what led you to opening your store? After high school, I got a Bachelors in Business from Grand Valley and moved to Chicago shortly there after to become a fashion buyer. I worked in the buying industry for a few years and then moved back to West Michigan and was an Interactive media buyer for an advertising agency. The marketing, retail, buying and advertising experience has all helped me get to where I am today. I initially started online with a retail shop from my house, and 8 months later I opened a store front in Muskegon.
How do you select which brands to stock? I like pieces that can be worn to work AND on the weekends. Styles that are easily transitional are important to me. I hand select everything that’s in the store. If it’s not something that I wouldn’t personally wear, I won’t carry it.
What is your vision for the store in future – are you thinking of expanding into different cities? I would love to expand. I’ve always thought downtown Grand Rapids would be a great next store location.
Best Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs? Just go for it. Just start. There’s a million reasons not to start your own business, but the only thing that really matters is whether or not you are passionate about it. There came a point in my life where the thought of not trying to pursue starting my own business, was a scarier thought than trying it and failing. That’s when I knew I had to do it.
